Abstract

The module provides an introduction to the geospatial web, which allows to search, deliver, download and process geospatial data over the web in an interoperable way thanks to a set of web services. Web standards from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) are introduced in detail, in particular Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), Web Coverage Service (WCS), Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) standards, Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW) and Web Processing Service (WPS). The relevant Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial applications (FOSS4G) compliant to the OGC standards are introduced, with special focus on web map servers and clients, including multi-dimensional clients based on virtual globes.

Structure

This module is composed of the following learning unit:

  1. Geospatial Web

Learning outcomes

After the training offer, the participant will be able to identify and describe the ecosystem of geospatial web services for managing geospatial data over the web; list the most popular OGC standards for geospatial interoperability, comprehend the main functions of each of them and understand the differences between them.

Intended Audience

Students in a field related to GIS and GIScience, professionals and stakeholders that need to implement or work with geospatial web services but are at the initial stage of such activities.

Pre-requisites

Only a basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the World Wide Web (WWW) are pre-requisites for this module.
